Florida Website to Help Teen Drivers

Posted on Oct 13, 2008

A new website has been created targeting teen drivers in Florida.  The Florida website allows teenage drivers to share their own driver safety tips and experiences behind the wheel with other teenagers in Florida.

The website, TakeTheWheel.net, was created by teens for teens, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. This site is interactive and gives teen drivers the opportunity to give advice and to challenge one another to take responsibility for their own actions when operating a motor vehicle.

Statistics show that more than 36,000 teen drivers in the state of Florida were involved in car crashes last year, based on a Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles report.  More than 479 individuals were killed in a motor vehicle accident where a teen was driving in 2007.  On the home page of the website, additional statistics are given showing that every 55 seconds a teenager is injured in a car crash and every 6.5 minutes a teenager is killed in a car crash.

The Florida website includes video clips of teenagers sharing their own stories of events that happened to them while behind the wheel.  There is a form where teens can submit their own videos for others to view.  This informative website also includes a driving quiz, safety tips, consequences of bad driving and advice on how to overcome peer pressure.

Teens can even make a commitment to drive better.  There is a form where teens can type in their names to make the commitment.  The commitment they agree to make reads, “Thousands of Florida teens are taking charge and taking a stand against dangerous driving habits. By submitting your name below, you're dedicating yourself to wear your seat belt, avoid drunk driving, follow the rules of the road and keep driving distractions to a minimum and to encourage the same in friends and family.”

Electra Theodorides-Bustle, the department’s spokeswoman, said that Florida driving instructors are also encouraged to use the website.
