Florida Driver Killed After Car Plunges Into Retention Pond

Posted on Jan 20, 2009

In Osceola County, a driver who appeared to have suffered a seizure, drove his car into an Osceola County retention pond on the morning of Saturday, January 17, 2009.

On Saturday morning, the man was pulled from chilly water approximately one hour after the accident.  Rescuers at the crash scene hoped to resuscitate the man due to the frigid temperature of the water, but he appeared to have been killed in the accident.

The crash occurred shortly before 11:00 AM at Osceola Parkway and Stillwater Drive.

According to an Osceola County Sheriff’s spokesperson, the driver had a medical condition that caused him to lose control of this vehicle and head into the retention pond.  A male passenger was able to jump out of the car, before it went into the water.

Four sheriff’s deputies attempted to jump in the retention pond to save the driver, but the car was at a depth of at least 25 feet and the deputies could only reach the roof of the car before they had to resurface.

A wrecker was brought to remove the car from the pond and dive teams from Orange County and Orlando were called to recover the victim.

The driver was taken to a hospital where an attempt was going to be made to revive him.

Rescue workers believed that the cold water could have lowered the man’s temperature enough to keep him alive, but it was a slim hope.

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Retention ponds are basins used to catch storm water runoff to prevent flooding. These ponds are usually created near development areas and have become increasingly popular.  Due to the popularity, retention ponds are often required in new development of buildings, parking lots, roads and so on.  Retention ponds are generally small when it comes to total acreage – most of these ponds are less than an acre. These ponds are typically shallow with sloping bottoms.
