Florida Bicycle Month Brings Awareness to Cycling Fatalities

Posted on Mar 28, 2011

The month of March is Florida's Bicycle Month, and May is National Bike Month, which brings attention to the safety of cyclists on the roads. Not only knowing the rules of the road for both bicyclists and motorists, but following such rules is what helps keep cyclists safe, especially on Florida roads.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently unveiled the 2009 bicycle accident statistics. Sadly, the state of Florida was once again ranked number one in cyclist fatalities, and since 2007, Florida has had the highest number of bicyclist fatalities. There were 107 cyclist fatalities in Florida that occurred in 2009, and 630 deaths nationwide that same year.

Lawmakers believe that knowing the rules of the road will help decrease accidents. Some rules for Florida motorists include:

  • A bicycle is considered a vehicle in the eyes of the law. A vehicle must allow three feet or more clearance when passing a bicycle.
  • If a cyclist is moving slow and is an obstruction to a vehicle, the motorist may pass a bicyclist. The motorist must wait until it is safe and clear if it is necessary to cross over a double yellow line.
  • Before entering or exiting a parked car, look to make sure the area is clear and can be done without traffic interference or hitting a cyclist.

There are many rules that bicyclists need to follow like staying as far to the right as possible, have the proper lighting on the bicycles, and being aware of one's surroundings.

If both bicyclists and motorists did a better job of knowing the laws and implementing them during their drive or bike ride, Florida bicycle accident fatalities and injuries would decrease.
