Fatal Hit and Run Driver Arrested in Hialeah

Hialeah police arrested Manual Fernandez two days after a fatal South Florida hit and run accident that killed Maria Morales Tuesday December 6, 2011.
As family and friends gathered Thursday to mourn the death of Maria Morales, a police officer approached her son Andres Pena and was told an arrest had been made. Detective Eddie Rodriguez a police spokesman was at the funeral of the 78 year old grandmother at the Lowe-Hanks Funeral Home in Hialeah where he gave Pena the news.
Morales was struck and killed as she crossed Le Jeune Road near 11th Place. She was on her way to visit her family. Morales had just gotten off a bus and almost at the sidewalk when she was hit and killed by a southbound metallic blue Hyundai Elantra. The driver Manuel Fernandez fled the scene.
Family members and police pleaded to the public for help in finding the driver describing the vehicle.
Thursday they got the call that Fernandez’s vehicle had been seen at a body shop. Police went to the body shop and looked at the vehicle. The damage was matched up.
The registered owner of the car was 54 year old Manuel Fernandez. He gave incriminating evidence and was arrested. He was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident and booked into a Miami-Dade County Jail.
