Fatal Accident May Have Been Caused by Heavy Rains in Pompano Wreck

Posted on Apr 01, 2011

After investigating a fatal Pompano accident where a woman lost control of her car and crashed into an oncoming delivery truck, investigators have indicated the weather may have been a contributing factor.

Carol Lashan Brooks, 21, was on her way home from work about 7 p.m. Monday, when heavy thunderstorms rampaged through the region. Brooks resided in Fort Lauderdale, with her younger brother, Luke, and his family. "She was the light of our family," said Luke, who has a 1-year-old daughter.

Broward Sheriff's Office officials say Brooks was heading south on North Powerline Road when her car jumped over a concrete median and into oncoming traffic. A delivery truck driver Alvaro Ghisays, 58, of Pembroke Pines, could not avoid crashing into the car, authorities said.

Brooks was taken to North Broward Medical Center in Pompano Beach, where she later died.

As strong thunderstorms sped across most of the South Florida region on Monday afternoon and evening, it dropped more than an inch of rain. Investigators say Brooks may have lost control of her car because of slippery road conditions as a result of the down-pour.

The Law Offices of David Benenfeld would like to wish the Brook's family our deepest sympathy and condolences during this difficult time.
