Ex-Cop Accused of Fatal Hit & Run

Posted on Sep 10, 2008

A former Miami-Dade police detective was sentenced to eight years in prison after he pleaded no contest to leaving the scene of an auto accident that killed a Pompano Beach man.

Michael Alayon pleaded no contest to the charges of the hit and run accident that occurred on October 10, 2006.  During the sentencing, the victim’s family had harsh word for Alayon.  The victim’s widow cried on the stand as she explained how Alayon climbed out of his car after the accident and left the scene.  She called him a coward for his actions.

Alayon left the crash scene, which caused a six car pile up.  He tried to cover up his involvement by reporting his vehicle stolen after an alleged burglary at his Hialeah home.  At the time of the accident, Alayon had been on the force for four years.

The attorney representing Alayon said his client made a bad decision. Alayon could have faced a 30 year sentence.
