Johnny Zalaya-Molina hit a parked car in Hialeah, but instead of facing a traffic ticket, he was sent to jail.
Zalaya-Molina, a 21-year-old man, reported to the Miami-Dade Northwest station that he was the victim of a carjacking. Once officers ran his license plate, they discovered that Zalaya-Molina’s vehicle had been involved in the hit-and-run crash in Hialeah. Zalaya-Molina was charged with filing a false police report.
Hialeah police state that Zalaya-Molina was driving his Hyundai on West 32nd Place when he crashed into a parked vehicle. His Hyundai was found abandoned about a block away from the crash site.
Approximately six hours after the incident, Zalaya-Molina walked into the Miami-Dade station near Miami Lakes to file a carjacking report.
Zalaya-Molina told the police that while he was operating his vehicle, he almost sideswiped a car. According to Zalaya-Molina, one of the passengers from that car emerged with a gun and ordered him out of his Hyundai. The carjacker then drove away with Zalaya-Molina’s car, he claimed.

Detectives soon discovered that Hialeah police had towed Zalaya-Molina’s car from the earlier crash scene. He later confessed to filing a false report, according to police. Zalaya-Molina posted $1,000 bond and was released from jail.
When Zalaya-Molina was contacted for a comment, he declined. “I don’t have time. I’m working,” Zalaya-Molina said when he was contacted by phone for an interview.
