Chain Reaction Collision in Palm Beach County

Posted on Jan 12, 2009

On Monday, January 12, 2009, at least two people were injured after a series of road calamities.  Trauma Hawk was dispatched and State Road 80 east and westbound to and from the Glades was closed.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Don DeLucia said on the morning of the accidents, “it’s a big mess.”

A sheriff’s office spokeswoman said it wasn’t immediately apparent as to how many vehicles were involved in the Monday morning accident or the amount of injuries.

Right after 9:00 AM, a tractor trailer and a car smashed into each other, which caused the tractor trailer to hit a train.  The train then stopped and on the other side of the tracks, two dump trucks rolled over, said DeLucia.  Luckily the train, which was transporting sugar and molasses, did not derail.

There was dense fog during the morning, especially inland.  Fog was probably still thick in the Glades at the time of the accidents.

The crash scene was located at State Road 80 near Sugar House Road, just east of Belle Glade, near Hatton Highway.  East of Belle Glade, State Road 80 becomes Southern Boulevard.  The road was closed, which caused a line of traffic consisting of tractor trailers and cars that continued to grow before 11:00 AM.  Traffic was diverted to County Road 880.  Authorities warned residents of Belle Glade, Pahokee and South Bay about the closure of the road that was causing traffic to back up.

Florida Highway Patrol and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputies were at the crash scene.
