Camper Causes Accident In West Palm Beach, Killing Hernando Beach Man

A fatal pickup truck accident on Florida’s Turnpike was caused by a defective camper and possible wind, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, Police say that 60-year-old Michael Skidmore of Hernando Beach, FL, was driving on the Turnpike in Okeechobee County when witnesses say the camper attached to his pickup truck began to look unstable and rock from side to side.
The unstable camper caused Skidmore to lose control of his vehicle and flip several times after the camper became detached from his Toyota Tundra. The West Palm Beach car accident took place just after 7 PM on Thursday, May 20.
Unfortunately, trailer sway and camper sway is a common cause of deadly Florida car accidents. Camper sway has a number of causes, and Florida police are still determining the cause of this week’s car accident. However, trailer sway can be caused by an improperly hitched camper, an improperly loaded camper, improperly inflated tires, the lack of an anti-sway device, bad camper breaks, a bad hitch, or and improper tongue. While all of the above problems can lead to camper accidents, other road conditions can help triggers them. Strong winds, crosswinds, reckless driving, speeding, changing lanes too quickly, or sudden movements could all lead to a camper accident. In addition, passing a large truck could also create a dangerous draft that could lead to a camper accident in Florida.
