Broward County to Update Technology at 700 Intersections

Posted on Dec 22, 2008

Broward County is undergoing a major upgrade in traffic intersection technology.  According to Henk Koornstra of Broward's Traffic Engineering Division, the Florida county is installing 700 new video detection devices at intersections countywide.  This is in addition to the 300 intersections that currently rely on the technology.

The camera system will replace the current pressure based pavement system.  Under the current system, coils buried in the pavement relay a signal to the traffic lights to change when cars depress the pavement.  However, because these coils degrade over time, citizens are complaining about lights that do not properly cycle.  The next technology will detect when a car is approaching the intersection and switch the lights from red to green.
