On Monday, April 11, 2011, a serious car accident in Fort Myers took place involving a dump truck and a Mitsubishi Eclipse. The crash occurred around 8:44 a.m. at the intersection of Ben Hill Griffin Parkway and Alico Road.
William "Skip" Perry, the driver of the 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse, was traveling east on Alico Road when he crossed over the center line and hit the truck. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the Eclipse hit the left front of the truck and rotated counter clockwise before coming to a rest on the eastbound lane facing south.
The driver of the Eclipse was seriously injured and taken by helicopter to Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Perry is the band director for the Three Oaks Middle School in Fort Myers.
Michael Dewayne Bertsch, the truck driver from Fort Myers, was traveling west on Alico Road at the time of the accident. He was not injured in the crash.
According to FHP, the accident closed down that intersection for a couple hours because the HAZMAT crew needed to clean the diesel fuel off the street that spilled in the crash.
No charges have been filed at this time; however, charges are pending.
The Law Offices of David Benenfeld would like to wish Mr. Perry a full and fast recovery.
