On September 4, 2011, Michael Corley, 59, was killed when a Ford Focus struck him as he stepped into westbound lanes in the 800 block of East Oakland Park Boulevard Saturday evening at 10:37 p.m. The driver was Paul Flanagan, 81, who stopped.
Corley was a homeless man living within the Broward County’s population of nearly 4,000 men and women. The news of Corley’s death spread through the local homeless community almost as quickly as he died.
Broward Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Keyla Concepcion said that she could not confirm the name of the man who was killed, but his friends all knew.
Johnny Boston, 55 said “He was a good guy. He just had a problem with alcohol like the rest of us, that’s all.”
Corley was a member of the homeless community for at least eight or nine years. He was thought to have come from Kentucky or Tennessee and was a Marine Corps veteran and father of six.
The police said a beer was found by the body of the man on the roadside.
No criminal charges have been brought against Flanagan, the driver of the vehicle pending an investigation, Concepcion said.
The Law Offices of David Benenfeld would like to extend their deepest sympathy to the friends and family of Michael Corley.
