Amtrak Train Slams Car, Kills Man

Posted on May 24, 2008

On Tuesday, May 20, 2008, an Amtrak train slammed into a car that was on the tracks near West Atlantic Boulevard.  The train, a Silver Meteor headed from New York to Miami, was going about 75 mph when it hit the car at 9:30 in the morning.  A Coral Springs man was killed in the accident and his female passenger was injured.

Traffic was backed up onto the tracks behind a red light at the North Andrews Extension intersection, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

The force of the crash sent the man's Ford Escape into the westbound lanes of West Atlantic.  The driver was killed on impact.  Four other vehicles were damaged in the crash, either by the train or by the Ford careening into them.
