4 Year Old Dies in Car Crash

Posted on Dec 22, 2008

In a tragic accident Friday night, 4 year old Markel Hannah was killed when his mother lost control of her car and smashed into another vehicle.  The accident took place on West Atlantic Boulevard at about 9:15 in the evening.  The child's mother lost control of her Ford Contour while heading east and crossed the center median and collided with an Infiniti.

Paramedics rushed the boy to Broward General Medical Center, but surgery efforts were futile.  All others involved in the collision were treated at the North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach.

Broward County deputies say that the child was riding in a front passenger seat unrestrained, which is illegal under Florida law.  All children under the age of five are required to be properly restrained.  According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, the mother has two front seat belt violations in the past two years.
