12 Tips for Thanksgiving Weekend Travel

Posted on Nov 25, 2011

Thanksgiving weekend begins the holiday season.  Family gatherings, black Friday shopping and travel can make highways congested and sometimes dangerous.  There are thousands of injuries as well as fatalities nationwide each year during the long Thanksgiving weekend.

Here are 12 travel tips to make your weekend a safe one and to be thankful for.

  1. Before getting started on your travel, check the condition of your vehicle.  Make sure windshield wipers, headlight, brakes, brake lights and tires are in good condition.
  2. Plan the route you are taking.  Use your GPS or a designated passenger to help navigate.
  3. Gas your car up.  Don’t let your tank run too low.
  4. Allow extra time to get to your destination.
  5. Avoid distractions such as cell phone use or other passenger distractions.
  6. Use seatbelts for everyone.
  7. Make frequent stops.  Schedule every couple of hours to get out of the car and stretch.
  8. Plan games and let the kids watch DVD’s on a player.  Have them wear headsets.
  9. Drive with your lights on during the daytime to increase visibility. Do this especially with bad weather.
  10. Use the highways rather than back roads.
  11. Be aware of advisory signs.
  12. Don’t drink and drive.

Make this the beginning of a stress free holiday, and enjoy your time with your family and friends.

The Law Office of David Benenfeld would like to wish you a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
