11 People Sickened at Water Plant in Coral Springs

Posted on Dec 02, 2011

After a truck driver delivered chlorine to the Coral Springs water treatment plant at 8:45 a.m., Monday, 11 people became ill including a firefighter and the truck driver.  They became sick after dangerous fumes were released.

According to Coral Springs Fire Dept. Capt. Rich Antonini, the driver was putting chlorine into a tank that also contained fluorine.  The blend that caused the driver and plant workers to complain of symptoms included feeling faint and having an itchy throat and skin.

Antonini said, “The mixture of both chemicals can make a deadly gas.”

The water never entered the city’s water supply and delivery was never interrupted according to Antonini.

The eleven people were taken to Coral Springs Medical Center for injuries that were not life threatening and expected to be discharged the same day.

The Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue, Sunrise Fire Rescue and the city’s fire department all responded to the incident.

The Law Office of David Benenfeld would like to wish the 11 injured people a fast and speedy recovery.
