How To Recognize Emotional Abuse In Elders

As our relatives age, it is sometimes necessary to seek the help of a nursing home for their care. Unfortunately, over 90% of all nursing homes are cited for violations. With these violations is the occurrence of abuse.

Elder emotional abuse is any form of verbal or mental abuse where the victim is an elderly person. The abuse is present anytime an act inflicts emotional pain, anguish or distress. You can recognize elder emotional abuse anytime you witness any of the following:

  • Failure to attend to the elder, including ignoring moans and calls for help.

  • Inattention and lack of assistance with grooming, meals, or any other daily tasks.

  • Isolation, including the restriction of mail, phone calls, visitors, and trips outside the nursing home.

  • Lack of support in doing interested activities, such as watching preferred television programs and attending favorite events.
