Hit And Run Drive Kills 17-Year-Old Bicyclist

A teenage bicyclist in Oakland Park was stuck and killed by a hit and run driver last Thursday.  Broward Sheriff’s Office investigators are searching for the driver of a 1995 to 1999, GMC or Chevrolet pickup truck or SUV.

Gabriel Amaya, 17, was riding his bike westbound along Prospect Road and stopped to use the crosswalk to ride across the southbound lanes of Powerline Road.  A light colored pickup truck or SUV hit the front wheel of the bicycle.  According to the investigative report, Amaya was thrown from his bike onto the roadway.

Amaya was taken by Oakland Park Fire Rescue to Broward Health Medical Center.  He was later pronounced dead.

When Amaya was struck, the driver of the vehicle stopped a short distance away, got out of the vehicle and then drove off away from the scene.

Broward Sheriff’s investigators are looking for witnesses of the hit and run accident, or anyone who has information on the person responsible for the accident and to contact:  Broward Sheriff’s Traffic Homicide Detective John Grimes at: 954-321-4845 or Broward Crime Stoppers at: 954-493-8477.

The Law Office of David Benenfeld would like to express their sincere sympathy to the family of Gabriel Amaya for their loss.
