Possible Street Racers Kill Two Pedestrians Visiting Fort Lauderdale

Two pedestrians were killed due to a possible street racing incident in Fort Lauderdale on Friday, according to Juan Ortega, Sallie James and Robert Nolin of the Sun-Sentinel online.  According to the article, two British visitors to the city were only fifty steps away from their Courtyard Marriott hotel door in Fort Lauderdale beach when a speeding car jumped the curb and struck them both from behind.  Upon impact, Craig Lewis Elford, 39, and 48-year-old Kenneth Watkinson were killed.  Police say that they received a phone call around 2:30 a.m. shortly before the vehicle-pedestrian accident from an eyewitness who saw two sports cars racing on State Road A1A.  A second witness said he saw the cars speed away south of Las Olas Boulevard, and reports say that the Porsche left the roadway and jumped onto the sidewalk only seconds later.  According to the article, both drivers fled the scene after the accident, and police were still searching for the owners of the white Porsche and the other light-colored sports car at the time of the report.
