North Miami Beach Police Department Names New Interview Room After Detective Killed in Car Accident

To honor the memory of a North Miami Beach detective who died in a tragic car accident in 2004, the North Miami Beach Police Department named its new interview room after Detective Orestes "Oreo" Lorenzo, according to the Miami Herald online.  The Herald reports that Orestes Lorenzo was driving to his Pembroke Pines home from work five years ago when another vehicle crashed into his unmarked police cruiser, which then ejected the detective.  After a week in the hospital, Oreo Lorenzo was taken off life support and died on July 9.  On the fifth anniversary of his death, department members unveiled a plaque in Lorenzo's name to other officers, his widow and daughters.  According to the article, the idea sparked after the department upgraded its system for interviewing witnesses and suspects--the "digital media" room is now equipped for video and audio recording, and it cost around $30,000 to complete.  Since interviewing was one of the last duties "Oreo" performed as an officer before his death, naming the room after him seemed appropriate.  Upon hearing the news, the detective's widow Yvette expressed how grateful she was that her husband's memory will live on.
